The Do’s and Don’ts of Vinyl Wrap Maintenance: Make Your Marketing Last

With proper maintenance, vinyl wraps can last upwards of 5 to 7 years, during which they can passively generate millions of quality impressions for your business, and for a fraction of the price of many other sign types.

If you’re interested in ordering vinyl wraps and graphics, or you want to know how to get the make out of your vinyl wrap purchase, today’s post is for you. Read on to learn some do’s and don’ts for effective vinyl wrap maintenance, or call (410)-877-6011 to speak directly with a vinyl wrap specialist in Baltimore, MD.

Make Your Marketing Last: How To Maintain Your Vinyl Wraps

  • DO wash your vinyl wraps and graphics regularly. The longer you allow contaminants to remain on your vinyl wrap, the harder they’ll be to remove during cleaning, so make the time for a quick wipe-down whenever you see visible dirt or grime.
  • DO NOT use brush car washes without research. While vinyl wraps may be run through touchless car washes without issue, the same cannot be said of automatic tunnel brush car washes. In many cases, brush car washes will cause dulling, scratching, or lifting at the edge of the graphic or vinyl wrap.

That said, not all brush washes are created equal; some gentler cycles may be safe. When in doubt, you can always call our vinyl wrap maintenance professionals for a quick (and completely free) consultation.

  • DO watch out for water spotting. Water spotting may not sound like a big deal, but these harmless looking drops can permanently damage your vehicle’s paint by etching into the clear coat. Water spotting is especially risky during the summer months, when the sun can bake those spots into the paint—or, in this case, into your vinyl wrap—and it can also be problematic in the winter, when water droplets can potentially flash-freeze. To reduce your risk, we recommend using a silicone squeegee to remove water, then finish with a clean microfiber cloth.
  • DO NOT use wax or similar coatings on vinyl wraps. Adding a protective wax finish to paint may protect it from exposure, but it doesn’t always help vinyl — it may even damage it!
  • DO store your vinyl wrap indoors whenever possible. Just like paint, vinyl wraps are degraded by prolonged exposure to sun and atmospheric pollutants, particularly when they’re allowed to accrue on horizontal surfaces, such as the hood, trunk lid, and roof of your vehicle. To avoid this degradation, do your best to store your vehicle in a garage or shaded area during the day time, and protect it from rain and snow at night. If you’re struggling to find storage space, consider using a cloth car cover.
  • DO NOT use pressure washers without the proper precautions. If you’re set on pressure-washing your vinyl wrap to save a bit of elbow grease, make sure the pressure is kept under 2000 psi (14 MPa); keep water temperatures under 180 °F (80 °C); use a spray nozzle with at least a 40-degree wide angle spray pattern; and keep the nozzle at least 12” away from and perpendicular to the graphic as you clean.
