Maintenance Mistakes: 5 Car Wrap Cleaning Errors To Avoid

Today’s post is all about how not to maintain your custom car wrap or graphics. Read on to learn the 5 most common and costly maintenance mistakes to avoid. Call 410-877-6011 for urgent car wrap questions or free quotes on custom designs.

Mistake #1: Leaving Contaminants On Your Car Wrap For Too Long

Just like doing dishes, the longer you leave dirt, salt, mud, or sap on your car wrap, the harder it will be to clean off when the time comes. And the more the stubborn the contaminant, the higher the likelihood of damage due to “over-enthusiastic” cleanings.

Don’t worry—you don’t need to pull over and do a full cleaning the second you notice a stain. But you should try to rinse off as much of the contaminant as possible with a spray of water whenever you get the chance.

Mistake #2: Using Carnauba-Based Wax On Your Car Wrap

Carnauba car wax can provide a lovely smooth finish and help repel water, but it’s neither suitable nor necessary for car wraps.

Do not apply any carnauba-based wax, polish, matte, or carbon fiber product to your car wraps, as it may deteriorate the vinyl film. Certain products containing abrasives must also be avoided.

Mistake #3: Using The Wrong Car Wrap Cleaning Products

Not all detergents are created equal. Some contain abrasives that can scratch or scuff vinyl car wraps. Though most mild, non-abrasive detergents will do, it’s always a good idea to contact your local car wrap manufacturer/installer to make sure it’s approved. If you’re ever in doubt, give our car wrap experts a call at 410-877-6011.

Mistake #4: Taking Your Car Wraps Through The Wrong Automated Wash

Car wraps do fine in touchless automated car washes, but certain brush car washes should be avoided. Again, not all are created equal—certain brushes may be suitable depending on their quality and washing style—but some will cause dulling, scratching, and lifting at the edges of your graphics. If you need some recommendations for wrap-safe car washes in Baltimore, Maryland, give our car wrap experts a call at 410-877-6011.

Mistake #5: Improper Pressure Washing Technique

The best option for car wrap maintenance is hand washing using mild, non-abrasive detergent and soft, clean clothes or sponges. However, pressure washing may be used under the following conditions:

  • Water pressure must be no higher than 2000 psi
  • Water temperature must be kept below 180 °F (80 °C)
  • Pressure washer must be equipped with a 40-degree wide angle spray pattern nozzle
  • Nozzle must be kept at least 1 foot away from the car wrap
  • Nozzle must be held perpendicular to the car wrap or graphic

Failing to follow these instructions could result in damage to your car wrap.
